Counter Strike Global Offensive (csgo) Dust II Blockout Level Design in Unreal Engine 4 - Final Day!

Counter Strike Global Offensive (csgo) Dust II Blockout Level Design in Unreal Engine 4 - Final Day!

I have really enjoyed this project and look forward to doing more similar in the future. I have a list of ideas on what I will be doing during the university breaks (as my university work will come first). If I have the time and can come up with cool little weekend ideas, I will do so. But for now, I will only be focusing on these blockout level designs during breaks. Before diving into another project, I'm going to do some further research on how to work on my spacing, scaling and also lighting. Hopefully I will be able to develop new skills from this and make use of them in my work.

Overall I am happy with the result of this project, I could have done a lot more detail on all the different buildings. However, this is why I have given myself a deadline. So I don't keep on going back to it and adjusting every little thing. All my projects will have deadlines, so I can challenge myself to see what I can achieve in the amount of time given.

I am open to criticism (so if you feel like there is something wrong with the blockout level, please point it out so I can have a look at it and try to get put it into perspective in my future projects). I am aware that the spacing, scaling & lighting is an issue that I need to work out. But if there's something else I am not aware of, please let me know as I want to get better as a level designer and won't take any offense to your comment.

Please see the final images below all with the direct YouTube link to my video showcasing the level.

  1. So I watched the youtube video and think the end product looks great. I too am getting into level design and am curious on the resources you've used to tackle this project. Are their any tutorials or other resources you could recommend in terms of Unreal basics of blockout, environment settings and lighting? Also, what progress have you made in regards to scaling and proportions?

    1. Hi Higgi, cheers for the comment and watching the video, it's highly appreciated. I haven't used blogger in a very long time and have only just seen your comment (which is nearly a year late, so I'm truly sorry for that). As this was a project I worked on a long time ago, the way I approached it was by having Dust II on my right monitor and UE4 on my left. Regarding scaling, I butchered it in this video (big time haha) but it was a great learning curve and scaling is very important to master when creating level designs (I myself haven to play around a lot with dimensions and ensuring it isn't too small or large). I spoke to professional Level Designer last week and he told me that sticking to a metric system will cover your back (as if you work from actual sizes and dimensions, your scale should work majority of the time). Last thing I will say, is if you want to get a feel for the level you are making and want to see if the scale is correct, play test the level while you are making it (that is something I didn't do with this Dust II level and I paid the consequence) so some parts of the level where way too long, so I would recommend you place a few blocks in the level and then play the level so you can see and feel the surroundings yourself to get a good view of how small / large things are. Regarding tutorials, there isn't much I could find (personally), just be creative with blocks (which I'm still learning to do haha). Hopefully that helps - you might already know all this as it's been nearly a year, so sorry again for that. But hope this helps and I will start to be more active on here (as I've just started my third & final year, so if you want to see progression of me work, stick around). I will hopefully reply to any your comments in-time (this time!) Cheers Chris :)
